Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Rare Antique Late 19th C. 1896 Inspirational Sepia-toned Chine-Collé Heliogravure (AKA Photogravure) of the Allegorical Scene of the Christ Child Amidst His Flock of Various Animals titled, Peace with the added Biblical text And a child shall lead them.
Taken from the Old Testament verse in the Book of Isaiah [11:6-7 & 65:25] where the artist drew his inspiration. Print & Publisher Info: The inventory number 9388, title & accompanying Biblical text, appears printed lower middle and right in the bottom margin area, Gravure Hanfstaengl, appears printed lower right respectively, and Franz Hanfstaengl, München London & New York, appears printed lower middle (near edge) in the bottom margin area. Hanfstaengl, as appears printed lower left in the image under the artists printed signature. Certain sources online state that Strutt completed the painting in 1896 and shortly afterward (that same year), Hanfstaengl reproduced the image as a sepia-toned heliogravure, but I have found a reference that Strutt exhibited Peace at the Royal Academy in 1868 No. 163 when he had been residing at Eaton Lodge, Writtle, Essex, England (his familys village), so the image may be older than most people have suspected.Over the course of his career, Strutt was known to have painted several versions/copies of Peace and after he died in 1915, at the age of ninety, the inscription on his tombstone simply reads: The Painter of Peace. Hanfstaengls Heliogravure quickly found its way into homes around the world to great acclaim, and a review from a later 1906 newspaper article summed up the success by stating.
But the work which has endeared Mr. Strutt to us all, young and old alike, the picture which has charmed the whole World, is that called Peace, or A little child shall lead them, Perhaps no other work or art ever captivated so large a number of people, of all sorts and sizes, of every nation and religion. The Emperor of Russia places it in his palace, the English working man hangs it on his cottage wall, it brings peace and joy wherever it goes. (Various info from: biblestudentarchives, PDF WilliamStrutt). The heliogravure itself is a nice sepia-tone gravure printed on a thin cream-colored India paper which was mounted via Chine-collé onto a typical heavy-weight cream-colored wove paper stock/substrate with platemark around the margins.Condition & Size: The Heliogravure is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age. The size with very wide margins is 9 x 11-1/4, Image size is 3-1/4 x 5-3/8.
No damage at all in image area. Extremely minimal (literally only a few) very slight & tiny faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the backing stock outer margin areas (none noticeable on Heliogravure itself) which arent too noticeable at all and arent even really worth mentioning.
No real creasing at all on the piece, with the tiny & completely negligible dog-ear bends in a couple outer margin corners, which also are slightly roundedalso completely negligible. Minimal outer margin edge wear with some tiny dents & dings here & there along the outer margin edgesalso negligible. Negligible toning of the stock from age which isnt even noticeable amidst the color of the cream paper stock on each.
This gorgeous antique 19th C. Heliogravure would make a wonderful addition to any inspirational/religious or art collection and has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
