An antique slate garden sundial which is not that unusual really. This one however is rather better than most as it has been engraved with the makers name. Franks Optician Leeds in a nice old font at the bottom.
It has three holes for attachment which are counter sunk. It has the upright part fixed thru the central slot and its simply got tied cord string behind keeping it in place.
It is a little wobbly.. But of course it would stay still if you fixed it yourself to a wooden mount board or to a stone column etc. It is 9 and half inch across and the bit stood up is 4 and 3/4 inch tall, and the slate is very nearly 1/4 inch deep.
Franks Optician of Leeds was founded in 1879 and lasted till 1950 and they were an optician & instrument maker. This is a really fabulous antique if you are into sun dials or Leeds related items. It has some tiny flakes off the slate on the upright part only.. The rest of it is in great condition and it has done really well to survive not being broken over the years being made of slate. Would make a nice gift for that special occasion.
