Up for your consideration, is this extremely rare what I believe to be a 18th possibly even 17th-century carved coconut shell, with a sterling figure of a black man holding up this highly detailed carved folk art coconut shell. On one scene there is a castle on a cliff, overlooking the boats in the harbor with men loading what appear to be barrels. On another scene there is a servant holding an umbrella over a man with a ruffle collared shirt and a stunning hat. Another looks like a native climbing up what appears to be a coconut tree, another are two men with a wheelbarrow full of coconuts, with the left-hand meets the shell there is a China man and a European man discussing I'm assuming the harvest of coconuts. The base is of a black man holding up this coconut goblet. It has a wonderful twisted sterling silver rim to the top of the coconut shell.
The casting is incredibly fine in detailing, with a lizard and a turtle on its base, which are incredibly detailed. This has been tested and it is at least 925 Sterling if not 999 sterling.
I guarantee you this never had a top to it. Though I do not see any markings on this sterling base. The coconut shell has been and professionally repaired. There are several tight but small thin cracks there are some repairs that have wood on the inside of the coconut shell, to give it more strength, and there is one slight what used to be a hole, but the repairs have been professionally done using what appears to be a reddish brown wax. This Does not take away from the beauty of this extremely rare and early goblet. If you do your homework you know how rare and expensive these goblets are. They come up for sale once-in-a-lifetime. If you collect these coconut shells, and I know this has some slight damages to it you would be foolish to pass this by.
This colonial silver mounted coconut cup is a must in anybody's collection. It stands approximately almost 9 3/4 inches tall and the cup is a little over 4 inches wide at its widest. The figure itself stands approximately 7 inches from the top of his hand to the bottom of the base, the screw that holds the coconut to the figure is made from silver.
