Nine Rare Antique 19thC Italian Silver Ornate Hair Pins Spadinn 1840s hairpins
These are nine, antique Italian silver hair pins, better known as "Spadinns" and date to c. 1840's Many Spadinn / hairpins would originally have formed a complex headdress, called raggiera, which was typical of the region around Lake Como in Lombardy. Raggiera means rays and the headdresses resemble a sunburst / rays. These hair pins have an ornate design, the verso is plain. Each has an anvil mark, which signifies they are 800 / 1000 silver. The anvil mark was used between 1812 - 1872. Eight have a makers mark AP, the other has G (pictorial bird) R, please view photo 10 for the marks on two of the pins, one is of the AP makers mark, the other the GR mark (the full set of marks are visible in photos 3 & 4). These are rare and there are few (or no) pieces of antique silver "spaddins" or'sperada' available for sale.
