This is a superb and rare Irish Dublin silver two handled loving cup with ribbed girdle from circa 1786 beautifully decorated with repousse and chasing by Thomas Jones of Dublin. The hallmarks are well struck and clear with no date letter which is normal for Irish silver from this period.
The subject is a scene with hunting dogs and pheasants in a wooded landscape background. A set of Dublin hallmarks have been erased from the cup in the vacant cartouche, even with the erasure the silver here is still thick as the cup is made from a very good gauge of silver. There is a very faint makers mark initial T and what might be a C for Charles Townsend can just be made out. I cannot see any of the Hibernia and Dublin mark details but would put the date of manufacture of the cup at sometime between 1780 and 1786, the outline of the original hallmarks can be seen on the inside of the cup. This I believe makes the cup quite rare as I do not know of any Irish silver with two sets of hallmarks on, albeit one being erased. The repousse and chasing work on the cup are a tour de force, I doubt you will see better on any piece of antique silver. It weighs 436g and stands 140mm high and 170mm handle to handle. The interior is in gilt and the condition of the cup is very good having no damage or repairs and with a lovely patina.
