FINE AND RARE ANTIQUE 18thC QUEEN ANNE SILVER TODDY LADLE JAMES II SHILLING 1687

This is a stunning small English early 18thC circa 1700 to1720 silver toddy ladle dating from the Queen Anne / George I period judging by the bowl decoration and cartouche surround. The cartouche surround is very similar to my 1713 Porringer. Small toddy ladles were made in the 17thC but in my opinion this ladle is probably a little bit later than the 17thC silver coin, but as in the last photo most experts believe the coin to be an accurate dating method. There is an very rare James II shilling from 1687 inset into the base in extra fine condition.

It looks like the 7 on the date of 1687 was overstamped when minted on a coin from 1686 which can. It has a lovely barleytwist baleen handle surmounted with a silver cap engraved with the initial'S'. There is a tiny split in the silver where fastened, mentioned for accuracy. There are no hallmarks that I can find which would be normal for a small silver item from this period. The bowl is decorated with fine chasing and repousse birds, foliage, flowers and grapes with a central cartouche engraved with the initials'MW' maybe from a later Georgian period.

Around the rim in repousse are the words "VICESIMO NONO DECVS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI" which is the. Latin motto around the milled James II coin inserted into the base. The condition is outstanding with a lovely patina it has no damage dings or repairs, the bowl is 59mm diameter and it is 29cm from bowl to end of handle.

There is a tiny flea bite to the baleen handle shown in photos which form part of the description.
