An extremely rare 18TH century delft polychrome ceramic figure of a Buddha called Pu-Tai-Ho-Shang (Bodhisattva). This piece is full of charm and character with well painted flowers and foliate design on his tunic robes. It is signed on the base in blue - VDuijn for Johannes Van Duijn or his wife of the De Porceleyne Schotel (The Porcelain Dish factory). Each one had a slightly different hand when it came to signing the base of the pieces. Just like black delft, there are only a very small number of Delft buddhas known to exist and they are either in mueseums or private collections.
The piece has been in our family for many years having been handed down the generations and was originally brought over to the UK from South Africa in the 1940's. Size: 165 mm wide x 120 mm high x 120 mm deep. Condition: It is in good condition for a 17TH century piece of delft.
There are glaze chips missing around both sets of fingers. There is a loss to the nose and foot as well as to the base rim. There are no cracks or restoration. (PLEASE ALSO USE PICTURES AS A CONDITION GUIDE).Check out my other items - Lots of other items added each week. If more information about any of the items listed is needed, please leave us a message.
