Offered here is an exquisite, late 18th century, English quill pen and ink drawing depicting a group of itinerant travellers - possibly Gypsies, or showmen - carrying their wares in a cart towards a distant town, with a dog, bear and monkey in tow. The work is likely a plein air sketch, possibly taken from a sketchbook, and is of a very fine quality. This is a very unusual scene in English art - the drawing is a scarce historical document which records a way of life now entirely disappeared.Authorship may be ascertained after further research.
