Antique 19th C rare small classical nude Narcissus bronze'Grand Tour' sculpture with wine pouch. This is a small version of the'Grand Tour' tourist piece. Beautifully made this is an excellent cast with high quality finishing and a lovely slightly rubbed patina to the bronze. 14 cm (5.51 inches) high. And circumference at the foot of the base is 15 cm (5.90 inches).
He wears a wreath in his hair and carries a goat skin wine sack and stands on a circular base. The piece is not signed. Good condition and no damage.
This bronze is a circa 1880 small copy of the original of the Narcissus figure which was discovered in 1862 in a nondescript house in Pompeii. It was the last antique statue unearthed upon the discovery of Pompeii. In a book sponsored by Chiurazzi & Fils, the secretary of the Naples Museum, Luigi Conforti, it was described as the most beautiful bronze ever to have been discovered at Pompeii.
