ANTIQUE 19thC GEORGIAN RARE SOLID SILVER MUSTARD POT, EDWARD FARRELL c. 1821
Antique early-19th Century Georgian solid silver mustard pot, of squat circular form on four lion paw shaped feet, exceptionally decorative, all over chased in relief with hunting and courting scenes amid trees, the handle realistically formed as a fig branch, the hinged lid in complimentary style mounted with a bee sitting on an acorn branch. Very annual and fine example of Farrell's work. Each part is fully Hallmarked English Silver (925 standard), London, year 1821 (f), Maker's mark E. F Edward Farrell, His flourishing imagination was influenced by 17th Century Flemish and German paintings. His tea services are often embossed with tavern and popular scenes inspired by Teniers the Youngers genre paintings. Farrell also experimented unusual designs after the Renaissance and Baroque, as well as in the most popular Rococo revival, his most notable work was commissioned by the Duke of York around 1819 and can be viewed in the V&A.
